Doctoraltams are available in black, or can be made with blue velvet, also known as PhD tams (PhDtams) in which the velvet of the academic cap matches the velvet of the PhD gown.

Both doctoraltams and PhD tams can be made with choice of bullion tassel or silky tassel. Both of these doctoral tassels are gold jumbo style and are permanently attached to the tam, however the bullion tassel is made out of a metallic thread, rather than the normal rayon tassel thread.

Both the PhD tams and the doctoraltam are available in choice of 4 sided, 6 sided or 8 sided models. Both PhD and doctoral tams are available in different sizes, to fit a large range of head sizes. Therefore when ordering, the customer should let us know their hat size or head size, to be sure hat fits properly.

The doctoral tam can also be made in other velvet colors, such as scarlet, red, purple, etc., however black velvet and PhD blue velvet are the most popular.

People often use the terms phd hood and doctoral hood interchangeably -- and quite often people will call and say that they have a doctorate in music, when in fact their degree is a PhD in music. Or the reverse: someone might call and ask for a PhD hood in music when his/her degree is a doctorate in music.

This is understandable, since a PhD is a doctorate, and most faculty members with doctorates teaching in universities have PhD degrees.

However from an accuracy in ordering point of view (that is, to be sure we give each person the correct hood for his/her degree), we generally like to differentiate between these two terms, since not all doctoral hoods are PhD hoods.

The difference between the two is that a PhD in music would receive PhD blue velvet; a doctorate in musical arts would receive pink velvet (since pink is the velvet color used to delineate music).

Similarly, a PhD in Education hood is not the same as a Ed.D. - doctorate in Education hood. Whereas the Ed.D. graduate would receive light blue velvet on his/her hood, to signify education, the PhD would receive the dark blue velvet.

For that reason, we ask people to specify their degree when ordering their regalia: PhD in Music (so we know to use blue velvet) OR Doctorate in Musical Arts (so we know to use pink velvet) when placing their order.

One of the nicest feature of this web site is the amount of information it gives, rather than just pictures and prices. The deluxe doctor's gown is essentially made-to-measure quality gown, but at "off the rack" prices. What we've done is take all of the fancy features of the made to measure gowns, using the most popular fabric, and created a deluxe gown, but instead of using a separate pattern for each individual to incorporate unusual neck circumference, sleeve length, etc., we use "off the rack" sizes based on the wearer's height and weight. The deluxe doctoral robes are generously cut with 7" more fabric woven into the fluting, they have extra plush velvet, bell sleeves, a pocket slit for the hand, braided cording behind the neck, etc. However, because we can make them in multiples (verses one at a time for completely made-to-measure) we were able to knock the price down to $290.00 for the deluxe gown with either generic black or Ph.D. Blue velvet trim. We believe this to be the finest off the rack doctoral gown available at any price! Our most popular, Deluxe Ph.D. blue velvet gown is pictured on our web site, however optional piping is also available on this gown. We can also custom make the deluxe gown in your choice of fabric colors, velvet colors and piping to match the regalia of most school requiring specialized regalia. Velvet tams can be purchased for ANY of the gowns. Tams are available in four, six or eight sided models, with your choice of traditional (silky) rayon two-button gold tassel @ $78.50 or with a gold bullion two-button metallic tassel @ $92.00 Wardrobe consultant Morté says: Most average to tall men prefer the eight sided model tam. This is the most round looking tam, and is the best looking on large individuals of physical prowess. Most average sized women and short to average size men tend to look best in the six sided model. The six sided tam is the most popular style, since it looks the best on most people. Most short & stocky women tend to look best in the four sided tams, since it looks the least round.
